Barong
guards the doorway of this Balinese temple and family compound. Barong, whose face is carved above the central portal, is a spirit of protection and beneficence. In Bali there is no separation between art, spirit, and daily life. 98% of Balinese are Hindu, and the central narrative of the Ramayana is visible everywhere. The stone figures to either side of the doorway are dressed in black and white checked sarongs, symbolic of the maxim that good and evil never appear in isolation, but where you find one, the other will be also.
